4-Point Grading System
Before any ruck, pouch, or pack leaves our warehouse, it goes through a four-step process to verify condition, function, and integrity. So you know exactly what you’re getting — and that it’s ready for the next mission.

GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR WITH OUR 4-POINT SYSTEM
At Smiths Surplus, every item gets inspected, tested, and graded by hand — not just listed and shipped. You’ll know exactly what’s showing up on your doorstep. No guesswork, no surprises — just surplus you can trust.
OUR 4 - Point Inspection System
Inspect — Every Piece Gets Eyes On
We examine stitching, seams, frames, buckles, zippers, and webbing by hand. If a frame is cracked or a component is repaired in a way that compromises integrity, it won’t ship. Notes about any non-critical issues appear in the product listing.
Test — Function Over Finish
Zippers are pulled, closures are locked, buckles are snapped, and webbing is flexed under tension. If a piece can’t perform the basics reliably, it’s downgraded or removed from sale. We don’t ship “half-functional” gear.
Grade — Clear Definitions You Can Trust
Premium
As close to new as it gets. Sometimes it is new. Expect little more than surface dust or light scuffs from storage. No holes, no repairs, no issues. For the collector or anyone who just wants a fresh start, Premium gear delivers that “straight-from-supply” feel.
Very Good
The sweet spot for most buyers. All the performance of Premium gear with slightly more visible wear — maybe some faint stains, dirt, or a small professional repair. Still clean, still fully functional. No holes or rips. When we say “great value,” this is what we mean.
Good
Your classic surplus grade — the kind that proves this gear’s been there, done that. Expect moderate wear: surface dirt, marker, light fading, and maybe a small hole or field repair. Still solid, still usable, and usually with plenty of service life left. Sometimes it just needs a quick rinse and a little TLC.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
Fair
This grade tells the story loudest. Heavy wear, large holes, or broken zippers — gear that’s seen things. Sometimes these make great donor parts or patch material for your kit. We’ve even had oddballs that function perfectly but fail for weird reasons — like USMC 3-Season Sleeping Bags in perfect shape but shrunk in the wash. If you’re 5 feet tall or shopping for a kid, those might just be perfect.
Each grade reflects not just what we see, but how the item performs. It’s part science, part field sense — and years of handling gear make that distinction second nature.
Why It Matters
Our process isn’t about perfection — it’s about trust. When you buy from Smiths Surplus, you know what your gear has been through and that it’s ready for more.
Stay mission ready.
Re-Examine — One More Pass Before It Ships
After grading, every item gets a final re-inspection before packing. If it doesn’t meet the expectations set by its listing, we pull it and re-grade (or scrap) it. Your order should arrive looking and performing exactly as described.
We’d rather under-promise and over-deliver. Photos and descriptions reflect each item’s true condition.
